D.J. stared out at the brilliantly colored trees once more, her mind a blank.
Josie spoke, her voice no longer soft but shaded with an anger D.J. had never heard her express before. "You'd rather live your life the way you have been? Working, existing, never feeling joy or love or hope? You're more pathetic than your father. At least he took a chance. Just once in his life he took a chance. Did you ever ask him if that chance was worth the pain? Did he ever say he regretted the time he had with your mother?" D.J. didn't answer. Josie reached out and shook her. "Look at me." D.J. looked. "Did he? Did he ever say he regretted loving your mother?"
"No," D.J. whispered.
"Of course not. Because even a short time on the earth with someone you love is better than a lifetime alone. I'm sorry your father set such a bad example for you. He didn't deserve to have the gift of a child. He should have realized some of his wife lived on in you and been grateful. But I'm not here for him. I'll deal with him later. I'm here for you. You can experience something wonderful if you'd just have the courage to take a chance."
D.J. saw her perched once again on a tree limb high above the earth.
"Take a chance, D.J. You won't regret it. I never have."
D.J. climbed down and started off through the woods. A few feet away, she turned to thank Josie. But the angel had disappeared into thin air.
